Get your balls out

Get your balls out

Part of the Radio Flyer drawing series
Sharpie and marker on paper
22 inches by 36 inches
2012

The Radio Flyer drawing series began as a proposal for an installation, but then I liked the drawings so much I kept going with it. This is one of the later drawings in the series, they get older as you scroll through. It's a simple story: a rolling suitcase turns into a Radio Flyer Wagon, grows wings, learns to fly, and goes out in the world, makes friends, joins gangs, meets bullies, discovers sex, gets bored and occasionally lonely.

In this drawing and the Bullies drawing just before this, you can see the suitcase is still morphing into a Radio Flyer.

This drawing relies on the full narrative more than some of the others in the series by including a rolling suitcase.  More than anything I was tickled with the idea of this little suitcase trying to get in on the action.

After the "Unsuccessful Threesome" drawing, I really had to do a "successful" one.

Wagon sketch

Not a finished drawing at all, but still an important sketch for this series. I covered some new ground with shading techniques so it feels like an important sketch to me.

This was the second drawing in the series and what got everything - truly - off the ground with this series. This drawing made the wagons more into characters than I anticipated, and it was after doing this one that I decided the wagons needed to go out and have more adventures, and so I began the Radio Flyer series of drawings.

My boyfriend owns this one.

The very first drawing in the series and the one that launched the rest.  This was originally intended as a proposal for an installation, but then I liked the drawings so much I kept going with it.  It's a simple story: a rolling suitcase turns into a Radio Flyer Wagon, grows wings, learns to fly, and goes out in the world, makes friends, joins gangs, meets bullies, discovers sex, gets bored and occasionally lonely.
